Make Healthier Choices When Going Out for Mexican

Posted on May 17, 2011 at 10:47 AM
It's tough trying to make good choices in Mexican restaurants. Here are a few things to help you make it a bit healthier, but still be able to enjoy yourself.

  • When you sit down, order a side of grilled vegetables to eat with salsa instead of chips. You'll still get the great salsa taste and the crunch. You might even enjoy your meal more since you won't already be full when your meal arrives because you devoured half a basket of chips.
  • Margaritas have a lot of sugar in them from the mix on top of the alcohol calories. Find out if the restaurant uses fresh lime juice and ask for more of that and less of the mix. Lots of bartenders get requests for skinny margaritas and will accomodate you. An alternative is a tequilla gimlet with a salted glass and a dash of lime juice, or simply trade in the margarita for a beer and save yourself hundreds of calories.
  • If you really want a margarita, don't order it until your dinner is ready. If you order one first thing and you finish it before the dinner comes, you are more likely to order a second.
  • Fajitas usually come with a lot of high fat/high calorie sides like sour cream and cheese. Ask to replace these with some fresh pico de gallo which is all vegetables.
  • Instead of dishes that are baked in a lot of cheese and sauce like enchiladas, order fajitas that have meat, vegetables and the fixings on the side. That way if you indulge in sour cream, cheese, and guacamole you can control the amount used and get a portion. You also don't have to eat all of the tortillas that come with it.

Keep nails trimmed and filed regularly. The Mayo Clinic advises trimming nails after bathing or soaking when the nails are soft and pliable. Trim nails straight across to the length desired and file in only one direction to prevent splitting and cracking along the edges of the nails. Thanks for sharing.

Watch for seedlings to emerge from the ground within one to two weeks from planting. Approximately two weeks later, when the seedlings have four to six leaves and are several inches high, thin the seedlings so that they are roughly 6 inches apart. Thanks.
