A Different Perspective on Change and Goal Setting

Posted on September 25, 2011 at 9:04 AM Comments comments (29)
Recently I listened to the CD set, The 5 Secrets You Must Discover Before You Die by John Izzo, and there was a part that I found very interesting when it comes to fitness. He was talking about change and how actively reminding yourself in a small way about changes you want to make has a big impact.

The took two groups of people who wanted to lose weight and divided them into two groups. The first group wrote down goals that fall into line with realistic goal setting such as I want to run 3 times a week. The second group just wrote a few words on a card like, "Be more active." They were to look at the card many times over the day.

The results were that the card group lost more weight than the goal setting group. The theory was that if you wrote a specific goal like running 3 times a week, and for some reason you were not going to meet that goal, you might not even right the 2 times or 1 time because you already blew it for the week. For the card group, you might make little choice throughout the day that support you card such as taking the stairs instead of the elevator.

It really changes the idea that fitness doesn't have to result solely from long bouts at the gym, but incorporating changes to daily living.
